Eating well with kidney disease on a budget
This information is for people who have been told they have chronic kidney disease but need to live on a tight budget. It can also be helpful by people who have limited access to fresh foods.
We recommend you seek further individualised advice from a dietitian about recommended amounts suitable for you.
No matter your stage of kidney disease, adopting a kidney-friendly diet is crucial for supporting kidney health and overall well-being.
What can I do to reduce food costs?
- Make a shopping list before you go shopping. You are less likely to buy impulsively when you have a list. Consider using our recipes with a paired shopping list (here)
- Buy in bulk if you have the storage space
- Avoid food waste by planning meals with what is in your fridge or cupboard
- Plan your meals ahead and make meals from ingredients in your cupboard
- Use your microwave or slow cooker when you can – these are cheaper to run and use less electricity
- Batch cook meals using pulses and beans instead of meat
Getting the Right Food
It is possible to follow a kidney friendly diet even on a tight budget. This way of eating is healthy for everyone – not just those with kidney disease.
See a dietitian for more specific advice and to get individualised advice.
